Four hours ago I tweeted : It is not snowing in Morristown yet. Please donate to local food pantry or shelter before it gets bad. Those folks need us more right now. That was my little tip of the day. I had no intention of going out to donate anything. I felt my job was to cheer-lead you guys into doing all the hard work.
A little while later, I checked my twitter feed. Some folks had RT’d me. Maybe I should get a little bit more involved. I found a list of shelters/food kitchens and tweeted: Calling folks on this list http://www.hud.gov/local/nj/homeless/shelters/morris.cfm
I was only able to get in touch with the Market Street Mission and Homeless Solutions, Inc. They both told me that they were all set for food now. Anything would be appreciated. I asked is there anything they needed for the snow storm. Salt. They both needed rock salt.
I wanted to see if my tweeps were gonna come out and help me. I checked who retweeded me. Mike from the College of Saint Elizabeth lives out of town. I couldn’t make him come out here today and risk getting stuck. I tried to call soon to be Mayor Tim. His campaign office was closed. Oh well. He would have known which store was most likely to give me a discount. I haven’t met Rosary yet. I am sure she would have come out and helped.
I called my neighbor David, and made him join me and Eva. We went to Moore’s Hardware in town. The guy there was very nice and happy to sell us salt. He helped David choose the right type for his walkway, and me for my dog. He wants me to tell him how well it works because it is a new line this winter. David payed for 2 bags of salt and I payed for 2. We dropped them off at Homeless Solutions Inc and Market Street Mission. The folks were very glad to have it. I don’t know how much of a quality of life improvement rock salt is. I hope it helps them in some small way.
I don’t know if my tweets encouraged anyone to go out for an hour and do something they usually wouldn’t. I don’t know if me doing it as well as suggesting it will encourage you guys to go out next time. If you want to volunteer to help me when I think of these crazy things, shoot me an email at scott@blogmorris.com
Thanks to my re-tweeters and to neighbor David for tagging along and paying for half the salt!
